Oireachtas Committee continues consideration of petitions

16 DFómh 2012, 18:17

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will tomorrow afternoon continue its consideration of petitions received by members of the public.

16 October 2012

The Committee is scheduled to examine petitions on the following topics tomorrow:

  • State Pension (contributory) Eligibility
  • Diminishing dignity of aged citizens of Ireland
  • Transparency in the Central Bank
  • Open access to publicly funded research

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Peadar Tóibín TD says:  “The petitions system, established last month, for the first time provides for members of the public to set the parliamentary agenda. With 33 petitions received to date, Committee Members have been encouraged by the level on interest in the petitions system. Tomorrow, we will have the opportunity to consider four petitions on a diverse range of topics related to public policy.

“Following consideration of the petitions tomorrow, the Committee may invite the petitioner to appear before it to speak on the matter. The Committee may also seek oral or written evidence from relevant organisations such as Government Departments, other appropriate bodies or stakeholders.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 17 October in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 4 pm. The meeting will commence in private session before the Committee considers the petitions in public. The Committee’s public proceedings can be viewed online via this link.
