Agriculture Committee to continue discussion on provision of farm management IT systems

22 DFómh 2012, 16:23

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will tomorrow continue discussions on how to strike an optimum balance between the public and private sectors in the provision of farm IT systems.

22 October 2012

It will meet with representatives from Teagasc and the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation.

Last month, the Committee met with representatives from two of the largest suppliers of farm management IT systems in Ireland, Kingswood Computers and Agrinet, on the issue. Both companies argued that the Irish State, through Teagasc and the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation, has been duplicating their work.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Access to cutting edge technology is key to sustaining a high performing farming and agrifood sector in Ireland. However, it is vital that the technology is delivered in the most efficient manner possible.

“Our Committee will tomorrow hear from the representatives of Teagasc and the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation. The meeting provides us with an opportunity to consider how best to balance the interests of the public and private sectors in the provision of IT in Irish farming.”

This meeting will take place 2 pm tomorrow, Tuesday 23 October in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000. The meeting will commence with consideration of a series of EU legislative proposals.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
