Sub-Committee on penal reform to hear submissions from five groups

23 DFómh 2012, 13:43

Five organisations will present submissions on penal reform to the sub-Committee on Penal Reform at its meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, 24th October 2012.

Chairman of the Committee, Deputy David Stanton said: “This sub-Committee's role is to examine the possible use of non-custodial alternatives to imprisonment – in particular strategies which might involve some form of early release.

It is important to hear at first-hand from those involved in the Penal system and also from those parties with proposals on penal reform. Therefore, we are looking forward to hearing from Professor Ian O’Donnell, UCD; John Costello, Chairman, Parole Board; Ciaran McCullagh, UCC; Dr Kevin Warner, Researcher in Penal Policy; Fr Peter McVerry SJ, and Eoin Carroll, Jesuit Centre for Faith and Justice.

The sub-Committee has received some detailed submissions on this matter and in this, its third public hearing wishes to further explore the points raised.”

This meeting will take place at 2pm on Wednesday, 24th October in Committee Room 2, Leinster House.
