A delegation from the Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will visit Cork Prison, Collins Barracks, the Maritime College and Naval Base tomorrow, Thursday, 25th October. All of these facilities fall under the remit of the Department of Justice and Equality and the Department of Defence which are shadowed by the Committee.
Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “The Committee wishes to view first-hand the conditions in Cork prison and be briefed on the proposed new prison to be built. It is important to hear at first-hand from those involved in the Penal system and meet with those involved in the penal system and this is the latest in a series of visits that the Committee has made to prisons in Ireland and will help inform our meetings on penal reform.
The delegation will then visit Collins Barracks followed by the Maritime College and Naval Base to be briefed the work carried out at these facilities which will be followed by a short patrol with the Navy. The Committee is committed to visit as many of these facilities as possible so it is fully informed on the important work that these facilities undertake on behalf of the State.”
