Communications Committee to meet ComReg on strategic priorities for postal regulation

6 Samh 2012, 16:26

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow meet with representatives from the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) to consider their recently published Postal Strategy Statement 2012 to 2014.

6 November 2012

ComReg is the statutory body responsible for the regulation of the postal sector, as well as the electronic communications sector. The Strategy aims to ensure the sustainable provision of a universal postal service, while at the same time providing postal service users with the choice, quality and innovation offered by a liberalised market.

Chairman of the Committee Tom Hayes TD says: “Our Committee looks forward to hearing from ComReg representatives on the Postal Strategy Statement published last week. ComReg acknowledges the paramount need for good communications with stakeholders in the industry in delivering the strategy.

“Our Committee is considering in-depth the future sustainability of the post office network, having heard from representatives of An Post and the Irish Postmasters’ Union in recent months. We have also welcomed submissions from individuals and communities around the country.”

“The Committee plans to prepare a report for the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources on how best to sustain the network. Tomorrow’s meeting is therefore a significant opportunity to engage with the postal industry regulator on how the requirements for a sustainable universal service and a liberalised market can be balanced.\"

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 7 November at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000.
