The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications today criticised the representatives of the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg) on the lack of clarity in explaining elements of their work in overseeing the postal industry.
7 November 2012
ComReg's Chairman Alex Chisholm addressed the Committee along with colleagues. ComReg is the statutory body responsible for the regulation of the postal sector, as well as the electronic communications sector.
Chairman of the Committee Tom Hayes TD says: “Reflecting a deep-held concern in communities across Ireland, our Committee is committed to finding a pathway towards a sustainable model for the Irish postal network. With the decline in users of the postal service, An Post is undoubtedly facing huge financial challenges.
\"Central to the discussions today was ComReg’s intention to fine An Post for failing to meet next day delivery targets. While the case is currently before the courts, Committee Members widely criticised the lack of clarity from ComReg representatives on the rationale for the scale of the fine in the first instance.
“While we welcome ComReg’s commitment to maintaining good communications with stakeholders, Committee Members expressed frustration at the lack of clear and detailed information from ComReg’s representatives on their systems and processes at our meeting today. Our Committee will consider inviting the Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte TD to clarify the issues raised today, including aspects of ComReg’s mandate.”
