Oireachtas Committee to consider An Coimisnéir Teanga report

7 Samh 2012, 12:00

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions will this afternoon consider An Coimisnéir Teanga’s Report relating to the awarding of bonus marks for proficiency in Irish in internal competitions in the Department of Social Protection.

7 November 2012

It will meet with representatives from the Department of Social Protection, the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform, the Commission for Public Service Appointments and the Public Appointments Service.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Peadar Tóibín TD says: “In May, we met with An Coimisinéir Teanga Seán Ó Cuirreáin for a wide-ranging discussion on his work in upholding Irish language rights. The engagement this afternoon with officials from relevant departments and state bodies centres on a recent report by An Coimisinéir Teanga to the Houses of the Oireachtas. The report stems from complaints that two applicants for positions in the Department of Social Protection did not receive any additional credit for their proficiency in Irish during the promotions competitions, even though they had met the criteria set out in the Department of Finance’s circulars.”

The Committee will also continue its consideration of petitions received by members of the public at tomorrow's session. Access petitions system and view petitions received so far: petitions.oireachtas.ie

The meeting takes place today Wednesday 7 November in Committee Room 4, LH 2000 at 4:30 pm, and will commence with consideration of the petitions. The Committee’s public proceedings can be viewed online via this link.

The relevant report of An Coimisinéir Teanga to be discussed at the meeting is accessible here.
