The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow meet with Siim Kallas, the European Commissioner for Transport.
7 November 2012
A former Prime Minister of Estonia, Mr Kallas is one of seven Vice-Presidents of the 27-member Barroso Commission. He will address the theme \"Connect to compete: challenges and solutions for EU transport\". The meeting will also discuss the priorities of the upcoming Irish Presidency of the European Union in the area of transport.
Chairman of the Committee Tom Hayes TD says: “Tomorrow’s meeting is a valuable opportunity to meet with Vice President Kallas and engage with him on EU transport policy. His is a timely visit, with Ireland assuming the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in January.
“Our Committee will play its part in a vibrant parliamentary dimension to the Presidency, with a meeting of the Chairpersons of the Communications, Education and Transport Committees from across the Union scheduled to take place in June 2013. The overarching priority of the Irish presidency is to secure sustainable economic growth and job creation. Consequently, transport policymaking will be based on promoting a safer, more efficient and sustainable transport network for Europe, so key to creating a more effective single market.”
The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 8 November at 2:45 p.m. in Committee Room 4, Leinster House 2000. Committee proceedings can be viewed online via this link.
