Justice Committee to meet Garda Commissioner on gangland crime

20 Samh 2012, 17:50

The Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan will appear before the Oireachtas Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality tomorrow 21 November 2012. The Commissioner will address a series of issues including organised crime, Garda station closures and community policing.

20 November 2012

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “Tomorrow’s meeting is a valuable opportunity to meet with Commissioner Martin Callinan to discuss the approach of the Garda Síochána to curbing organised crime. Our Committee has followed the on-going violence associated with organised crime with deep concern. We look forward to a detailed briefing from Commissioner Callinan on the efforts by the Gardaí to curtail this serious criminal activity and bring those involved in such groups to justice.

“In December 2011 the Minister announced the closure of 39 Garda Stations and it is opportune to reflect on how An Garda Síochána as an organisation adapted to the adjustments one year on. Conscious of the necessity to correct the imbalances in our public finances, further efficiencies  to Garda structures are expected in 2013. Our Committee will be keen to explore with the Commissioner the potential impact of any future closures on front-line policing.”

“The National Model of Community Policing was launched in 2009 and our Committee will also wish to explore with the Commissioner the progress in embedding community policing models nationwide.”

This meeting will take place in Committee Room 2, Leinster House on Wednesday 21 November, commencing in public session at approximately 10 am. Later in the day, at 2 pm, the Committee will scrutinise a series of EU legislative proposals.

Committee proceedings can be followed live.
