Agriculture Committee to discuss environmental dimension of CAP Reform

17 Noll 2012, 15:50

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will tomorrow meet with representatives from the Environmental Pillar on the on-going CAP negotiations.

17 December 2012

The Environmental Pillar is a national social partner which represents 26 national environmental groups in Ireland.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “Our Committee welcomes the opportunity to hear from this important voice on environmental issues nationally. We have held extensive discussions this year with key stakeholders in Irish agriculture on the proposed reforms. As a Committee, we recognise the need for a CAP that maximises food production in a sustainable manner, while protecting rural communities. The Environmental Pillar will tomorrow present on what they see as the priorities for the negotiations, which will centre on ensuring that CAP in the future rewards recipients who deliver the most environmental benefits.”

Prior to the engagement with the Environmental Pillar, the Committee will meet with representatives from the Nutrition and Health Foundation (NHF). The NHF is a grouping of key stakeholders who communicate evidence based information on nutrition, health and physical activity to encourage an improved and healthier society in Ireland.

Deputy Doyle continues: “At our meeting tomorrow we will also hear from the Nutrition and Health Foundation. Obesity is one of the most serious health issues facing the developed world and needs to be tackled urgently to curb the increasing strain of its impact on our health system. We look forward to hearing more about the NHF’s work and that role that the Irish agri-food industry, with its enviable record in producing clean, green and healthy food, can play in the debate.”

The meeting will take place tomorrow Tuesday 18 December in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 at 2 p.m.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
