Jobs Committee to meet chief executive designate of the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority

The Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation will meet with Brendan Walsh, Chairman Designate, Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority tomorrow, Tuesday, 18th December 2012.

The Authority has four principal objectives:

• supervise how the prescribed accountancy bodies regulate and monitor their members;
• promote adherence to high professional standards in the auditing and accountancy profession;
• monitor whether the accounts of certain classes of companies and other undertakings
comply with the Companies Acts and, where applicable, Article 4 of the IAS Regulation;
• act as a specialist source of advice to the Minister on auditing and accounting matters.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “Under the Programme for Government, those who are being proposed for appointment as chairpersons of State boards are required to make themselves available to the appropriate Oireachtas Committee. The meeting tomorrow with Brendan Walsh will allow the Committee consider the approach he proposes to take as Chairperson of the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority and discuss his views about its priorities.

“While the Minister will take the decision, as appropriate, to confirm Mr Walsh as chairperson, we are looking forward to a constructive and indepth engagement with the chairman designate about the key issues for the authority. Transcripts of our debate will be forwarded to the Minister for his perusal.”

Before the meeting with Mr Walsh, officials from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority will come before the committee for further Scrutiny of COM(2011)778, a proposal for a directive of the European Parliament and of the Council amending Directive 2006/43/EC on statutory audits of annual accounts and consolidated accounts; and COM(2011)779, a proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on specific requirements regarding statutory audit of public-interest entities.

This meeting will take place on Tuesday, 18th December 2012, in Committee Room 2, Leinster House 2000 at 1.30pm.
