Education Committee to meet Chairman Designate of National Council for Special Education

18 Noll 2012, 15:12

The Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection will tomorrow meet with Eamonn Stack Chairman Designate of National Council for Special Education (NSCE).

18 December 2012

The National Council for Special Education has a number of key functions, including:

  • planning for, and co-ordinating, the provision of education for children with special educational needs and ensuring that a continuum of special educational provision is available
  • conducting and carrying out research
  • providing policy advice to the Minister for Education and Skills in relation to special education
  • disseminating information, including best practice, on special education to parents, schools and other interested persons
  • consult with voluntary bodies to ensure that their knowledge and expertise can inform the development of policy by the Council.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy TD says: “Tomorrow’s meeting is a valuable opportunity for our Committee to engage with the Chairman Designate of what is an important body in the delivery of education services to those with disabilities. The meeting will serve to contribute to transparency in appointments to State Boards and a transcript of the discussion will be sent to the Minister for Education for his consideration in the appointment process.

“The budgets for programmes of special education have endured a series of adjustments in recent years and our Committee looks forward to exploring the current challenges facing the education system in this area.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 19 December at 1 p.m. in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000.

The meeting will commence with scrutiny of EU Legislative Proposal COM(2012)617 with officials from the Department of Social Protection. The proposal relates to the Fund for European Aid to the Most Deprived. Access Proposal.
