The Committee on Health and Children will discuss the recently published independent study into ward staffing levels in Irish hospitals when it meets with the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation (INMO) tomorrow, Thursday, 24th January 2013.
The survey carried out for the INMO said that staffing levels of nurses in Irish hospitals are well below those in the UK.
Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “We are looking forward to our meeting with representatives of the INMO when we can discuss its report in greater depth. It is important to meet with and hear at first-hand from those involved in the healthcare sector to get their perspective on their main concerns. The provision and management of nursing services are a key element of an effective health care system and our focus must be on the delivery of frontline services which comply with modern best practice to ensure patient well-being and safety are paramount. Tomorrow, the INMO will present us with results of its study and outline their issues in relation to staffing. Our meeting will also provide Committee Members with an opportunity to raise any concerns or questions they may have in relation to this report.”
The meeting takes place tomorrow, Thursday, 24th January, 2013 at 9.30am in Committee Room 2, LH 2000.
At the beginning of this meeting the Committee will undertake scrutiny of EU legislative proposals COM(2012)541, a proposal for a regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on in vitro diagnostic medical devices; and COM(2012)542, a proposal for a regulation on medical devices, and amending Directive 2001/83/EC, Regulation (EC) No 178/2002 and Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009.
