The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs continues its national debate on the future of the European Union tomorrow afternoon with Dublin MEPs Gay Mitchell, Emer Costello and Paul Murphy.

The meeting is expected to explore:
- Financial, budgetary and economic policy integration in the EU;
- Democratic accountability, legitimacy and political union; and
- The UK and the EU - implications for Ireland
Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “Over the past few weeks we have heard insightful contributions from leading economists and media commentators to commence a national debate on Ireland in an evolving European Union. With the changes introduced in the Lisbon Treaty, the European Parliament has significantly enhanced powers with ever more policy requiring its approval. The journalists before us last week commended much of the European Parliament’s work, citing in particular the efficiency of its Committee system. Our meeting tomorrow will hear from the distinct perspectives of these three Dublin MEPs and, in particular, how we are to better connect the work of the European Parliament with the wider public.”
The meeting takes place at 2 pm tomorrow 7 February in Committee Room 2, LH 2000.

Call for Submissions: The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs is leading a national debate on Ireland and the future of the European Union. As part of this process, the Committee is inviting submissions from individual members of the public and organisations on the future of the European Union and Ireland’s role in that Union.
