The Chairs of the Agriculture and Fisheries Committees from the parliaments of EU Member States meet in Dublin Castle this Monday 11 March, to engage with EU Commissioners and Minister Simon Coveney on the future of the Common Agriculture and Fisheries Policies.

The Meeting will also have a special focus on improving access to farming for young farmers across the EU.
Under the chairmanship of Andrew Doyle TD, Chair of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the meeting takes place in the Conference Centre in Dublin Castle from 8:45 am on Monday (programme below).

Chairman of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine Andrew Doyle TD says: “With talks at a decisive phase, it is an excellent opportunity to meet with Commissioner Ciolos and Minister Coveney on the current state of play in the CAP negotiations. The reform of the CAP is vital for the provision of safe, efficient and sustainable food production across the Union and we look forward to hearing the perspectives of our European counterparts on the most important issues facing them. There will be a special focus on the age profile of farmers in the EU, where only 7% are under the age of 35, and the need to attract young farmers into the industry. Innovative ideas on training and education as well as international policies on increasing access for young farmers will also be examined.”
“The reform of the CFP will have a major impact on maintaining a sustainable fisheries industry across Europe. In the afternoon, the Meeting will greatly benefit from an opportunity to engage with Commissioner Damanaki and Minister Coveney, particularly on developments over the last number of weeks, where there has been a common Council position reached on the elimination of discards by 2019.
“Each of the eight meetings being hosted by the Houses of the Oireachtas will be held in public, broadcast live on Oireachtas UPC Channel 207, and webcast live on the dedicated website for the parliamentary dimension of the presidency, www.parleu2013.ie. We hope that this will provide the citizens we serve with a window into discussions and debates between European parliamentarians, in areas of critical importance to communities in every corner of the country.”
The event is the third in a series of eight meetings being hosted by the Houses of the Oireachtas during the six month Presidency, details of which are accessible on parleu2013.ie.
