Education Committee to meet with e-Learning providers

12 Márta 2013, 17:18

The Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection tomorrow meets with some of those at the forefront of digital learning in Ireland, meeting with a leading online college as well as a company that provides online workspace to assist learning in primary and secondary schools.

12 March 2013

Dr Sean Rowland, President and Dr Nicholas Breakwell, Executive Dean, of Hibernia College Dublin are addressing the Committee. Hibernia College offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses online. Later in the session, the Committee will hear from representatives of schoolbag.ie, which provides an online workspace for students and teachers in Irish schools.

Committee Chair Joanna Tuffy TD says: “Tomorrow’s meeting is an opportunity to continue our consideration of the fast-changing area of e-Learning. Hibernia College is probably best known in the area of teacher education and its representatives tomorrow will outline the college’s development since its establishment in 2000 and plans for the future.”

“Last month, we heard from Department of Education officials on plans to further develop ICT infrastructure in Irish schools. With so much of our daily lives now conducted online, we were told that embedding digital literacy in the school curriculum is an imperative. We will also have an opportunity to hear from schoolbag.ie on the possible applications for their system in Irish schools.”

The public session of this meeting takes place at 1:30 pm tomorrow Wednesday 13 March in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
