The Committee on Health and Children will continue its series of hearings on tackling childhood poverty tomorrow, Thursday 14th March 2013 when it meets with Eleanor McClory, Chief Executive, Young Ballymun; Preparing for Life and Marian Quinn, Chief Executive Officer, Childhood Development Initiative.

13th March 2013

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “Following on from our informative and thought-provoking meeting on Tuesday with Startstrong, Barnardos and One Family, will continue our hearings tomorrow when we will hear from Young Ballymun, Preparing for Life and Childhood Development Initiative.

Childhood poverty is an issue which is of interest and concern to our committee. As the Committee with a remit in the areas of health and children, it is important for us to play our part in addressing this issue and in helping to devise potential solutions to the problem of childhood poverty.

Tomorrow, we will be keen to hear from Young Ballymun, Preparing for Life and Childhood Development Initiative on the types of initiatives they feel are necessary to address the problem of poverty among children. Committee Members will also have a chance to raise any issues or concerns they may have on the matter.”

Before the meeting on childhood poverty, the Committee will hear from Mike Glynn, Chief Executive Officer, Epilepsy Ireland on the challenges relating to epilepsy in Ireland.

Deputy Buttimer said: “Epilepsy Ireland was established in 1966 by a group of individuals concerned to improve the quality of life of people with epilepsy in Ireland and works to meet the needs of everyone with epilepsy in Ireland and their families and carers. Tomorrow, we will have a chance to hear from Epilepsy Ireland’s chief executive on the challenges facing those with epilepsy and their families, such as a lack of awareness and understanding of the issue, potential discrimination and dealing with everyday matters such as driving.”

The meeting starts at 9.30am tomorrow, Thursday, 14th March, 2013 in Committee Room 2, LH 2000.

Committee proceedings can be followed live.
