The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications tomorrow continues its hearings on the challenges facing individuals, families and communities from the rise of social media, including the challenges posed by cyber-bullying and online harassment. Representatives from Google and Digital Rights Ireland will address the Committee.
19 March 2013
Chairman of the Committee Tom Hayes TD says: \"We look forward to hearing from the representatives of Google and Digital Rights Ireland. Google representatives are expected to outline their company policies relating to inappropriate content, particularly on the YouTube video sharing platform. Digital Rights Ireland will expand on their earlier written submission to the Committee, which argued that existing legislation is sufficient to cover incidents of bullying and harassment in online communication.”
“This is the final scheduled public hearing of a series of informative sessions on social media. Committee Members have widely acknowledged the very positive and exciting potential of social media. However, there is a fine balance to be struck between allowing freedom of speech on these channels on the on hand and not impacting adversely on people's individual rights on the other. The meeting with representatives from Google and Digital Rights Ireland is a valuable opportunity to further inform a report the Committee intends to publish on the matter.”
The meeting commences tomorrow 20 March at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
