EU Affairs Committee to discuss the European Youth Guarantee

20 Márta 2013, 16:14

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow afternoon discuss the merits of the European Youth Guarantee. Last month, EU ministers committed to guarantee the offer of a new job, training or education for under-25s unemployed within four months of leaving school or being made redundant.

20 March 2013

James Doorley of the National Youth Council; James Higgins of the European Youth Forum and Dermot Stokes, formerly of Youthreach will be before the Committee.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD said: “There is no more urgent issue facing Ireland and Europe than that of unemployment, and youth unemployment in particular. The Irish Presidency decided to treat the proposal for a Youth Guarantee as a priority and Ministers agreed on 28 February that each Member State should ensure that young people receive a quality offer of employment or of continued education, an apprenticeship or traineeship within four months of becoming unemployed. The initiative has the potential to curb the scourge of youth unemployment Europe-wide. We look forward to hearing three distinct perspectives on what measures are required to ensure the Guarantee is appropriately implemented across Member States. ”

The meeting takes place at 2 pm tomorrow 21 March in Committee Room 2, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
