Oireachtas Committee to continue discussions on sustaining rural coastal and island communities

20 Márta 2013, 17:30

The Oireachtas Joint Committee sub-Committee on Fisheries will tomorrow morning continue its discussions on promoting sustainable coastal and island communities.

20 March 2013

Officials from the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht will discuss the issue of island and coastal (within the 12 mile zone) fisheries and their counterparts from the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources will update the Committee on inshore fisheries, specifically sea angling.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “The Joint sub-Committee on Fisheries this afternoon commenced a series of meetings on how to sustain coastal and island communities. We heard from Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine Officials on the potential for aquaculture development off Ireland’s coasts.

“The meeting with two other relevant Government Departments tomorrow will grant the Committee a solid understanding of what policy options are available to bolster coastal and island communities. The sub-Committee intends to publish a report which will seek to identify the current socio-economic situation in rural coastal and island communities, examine existing government policy that supports existing industries and services and highlight which alternative industries or services for such communities merit further consideration.”

The meeting tomorrow commences at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000 tomorrow 21 March 2013.
Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
