Environment Committee to meet Kildare County Council as part of hearings on flooding

25 Márta 2013, 12:12

Representatives of Kildare County Council will attend the meeting of the Committee on Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht tomorrow, 26th March 2013 as it continues with its hearings on the difficulties in getting home insurance for properties in areas that have experienced extreme weather events.

Leas-Chathaoirleach of the Committee Noel Coonan TD said: “The atrocious weather and incidences of flooding over the past few days is just another example of the increasingly frequent extreme weather events that have impacted heavily on various parts of the country in recent years.

For many communities and families, the trauma caused by flooding continues as they are now facing insurance problems. The problems people are experiencing with flooding and the impact of extreme weather on our communities forms a key part of the Committee’s current agenda and we have already met with various groups from communities around the country who are dealing with this issue.

Tomorrow, we will meet with representatives from Kildare County Council to get their perspective on the issue. It is a chance for Committee Members to look specifically at what measures one local authority has done, and is doing, to deal with, or help mitigate, the impact of extreme weather events. It is also an opportunity to see what impact measures taken by local authorities is having for individuals, households, businesses and farming communities who are continually disadvantaged through non-cover or inflated insurance premiums as a result of extreme weather in their communities.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.15pm tomorrow, Tuesday 27th March 2013.
