Finance Committee to discuss banking charges with Central Bank and ISME

16 Aib 2013, 15:13

A review of banking charges in the Irish financial sector will be on the agenda of the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform tomorrow, Wednesday 17th April 2013 when it meets with representatives from the Central Bank and business group ISME.

Ciarán Lynch, TD, Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, said: “A recent survey of its members from business lobby group ISME not only found that half of applicants for credit were refused, but that 40% of respondents had increases in bank charges imposed. Tomorrow we will meet with representatives from ISME where we can hear in more detail about the issues many small businesses are experiencing in relation to bank charges. We will also meet with Central bank officials to get their perspective on the subject. Members will also have a chance to raise any issues or concerns they may have in relation to banking charges. While we recognise that banks must operate a sustainable business model, they must do so in a manner that reflects a healthy level of competition in the market.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2pm on Wednesday, 17th April 2013.
