Justice Committee to hear from Traveller groups on the issue of Traveller ethnicity

16 Aib 2013, 17:06

The Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will hear presentations from representatives from the Irish Traveller Movement and Pavee Point Travellers’ Centre at its meeting of tomorrow, Wednesday, 17th April 2013.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “According to the Equality Authority, an understanding of Traveller ethnicity is central to the effective promotion of equality of opportunity for the Traveller community. However, the issue of Traveller ethnicity has been the subject of debate in this country. Tomorrow, we will have a chance to hear from representatives from the Irish Traveller Movement and Pavee Point Travellers’ Centre. As well as hearing directly from Travellers on their hope to be recognised as an ethnic group, we will be keen to hear their views on the academic and current debate around Traveller ethnicity. We would also be interested to hear from them on how they would see recognition of Traveller ethnicity making a difference.”

This Committee will take place in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 2pm on Wednesday, 17th April 2013.
