Finance Committee to discuss April 2013 Fiscal Assessment Report

23 Aib 2013, 17:02

The Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform will discuss the Fiscal Assessment Report (April 2013) tomorrow Wednesday 24th April 2013 when it meets with representatives from the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council.

The Irish Fiscal Advisory Council was established in June 2011, as part of a wider agenda of reform of Ireland’s budgetary architecture. The role of the Council is to independently assess, and comment publicly on, whether the Government is meeting its own stated budgetary targets and objectives. It assesses the appropriateness and soundness of the Government’s macroeconomic projections, budgetary projections and fiscal stance.

In its most recent report, the Council’s assessment is that the planned adjustments of €3.1 billion in 2014 and €2 billion in 2015 should not be reduced. The Chair of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council, Professor John McHale also said that significant uncertainties remain, particularly around the prospects for growth and the capacity to meet expenditure reduction targets in Health.

Liam Twomey TD, Vice Chairman of the Committee on Finance, Public Expenditure and Reform, said: “This is the fourth Fiscal Assessment Report issued by the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council. There is much to consider in this latest report. We are looking forward to a lively and open discussion with the representatives from the Council at our meeting tomorrow. It will offer Members a chance to engage with the Council and raise any issues they have in relation to the report.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2pm on Wednesday, 24th April 2013.
