Committee to engage with Sports Minister in advance of Council of Ministers meeting

7 Beal 2013, 14:13

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow meet with the Minister of State with responsibility for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring TD to discuss the upcoming Council of Sports Ministers meeting.

7 May 2013

Taking place in the configuration of the Education, Youth, Culture and Sport Council, Minister Ring will chair the meeting as part of the Irish EU Presidency.

Committee Chairman Tom Hayes TD says:” Our Committee has an important oversight role on the Government’s interaction with the European Union on policy related to the Departments of Transport, Tourism and Sport as well as of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources. We will engage with Minister Ring on the approach he proposes to take as chair of the forthcoming Council, which takes place in Brussels on 17 May.”

Tomorrow’s meeting, which will also include consideration of two EU legislative proposals, takes place as part of a wide-ranging Oireachtas programme in relation to Europe week.

Deputy Hayes continues: “Our Committee will also carefully consider two important EU legislative proposals tomorrow. The first proposal COM(2013)130  establishes common rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding and of cancellation or long delay of flights. COM(2013)147 aims to reduce the cost of deploying high-speed electronic communications networks.”

The Committee meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 8 May at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4. It will commence scrutiny of EU legislative proposals.
