EU Affairs Committee to meet UK’s Minister for Europe

8 Beal 2013, 17:02

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on EU Affairs tomorrow meets with David Lidington MP, UK Minister for Europe, as part of a series of events in the Houses of the Oireachtas to mark Europe Week.

8 May 2013

The meeting will focus on the current approach of the United Kingdom to the European Union.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “We look forward to a constructive engagement with Mr Lidington tomorrow. Committee Members have closely and carefully followed the changing approach of the United Kingdom to the European Union in recent months. Prime Minister Cameron’s indication of a desire for renegotiation of parts of the relationship with the European Union, and his commitment to a referendum, has been the source of some debate at recent Committee meetings. Any change in the relationship between our closest neighbour and Brussels will have considerable implications for Ireland, which Committee Members will have the opportunity of exploring tomorrow.”

The second session of the meeting tomorrow with Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore TD will focus on the April and May General Affairs Council Meetings.

Deputy Hannigan continues: “An important part of this Committee’s role is to explore Irish Government policy at the monthly General Affairs Council (GAC) meetings Brussels. The Tánaiste will update the Committee on the April and May meetings, which have focused on the on-going negotiations on the Multi-annual Financial Framework and preparing for the  critical May and June European Council meetings.”

The meeting with Minister David Lidington commences place at 11:15 am tomorrow 9 May in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The second session with Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore TD will commence in the same room at 2:15 pm. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
