The sub-Committee is likely to reconvene on Thursday morning to continue its consideration of the Bill.

4 June 2013

Sub-Committee Chairman Ciarán Lynch TD says: “This meeting will allow our sub-Committee consider this important piece of legislation with Minister Howlin, which seeks to provide for a comprehensive statutory framework for the Houses of the Oireachtas to conduct inquiries within the current constitutional framework. The legislation has the potential to significantly strengthen the effectiveness the Houses of the Oireachtas in conducting parliamentary inquiries and warrants careful consideration at Committee Stage.

\"Underpinning the sub-Committee's examination of the Bill will be the need to ensure robust systems are in place in advance of the proposed Oireachtas banking inquiry. Tomorrow's meeting is an opportunity to explore whether the legislation gives the Houses of the Oireachtas the necessary tools to conduct a detailed examination into the chain of events which led to Ireland's financial crisis.”
