EU Affairs Committee to discuss role of European Parliament in bolstering public confidence in EU

17 Meith 2013, 10:30

Francis Jacobs, Head of the European Parliament Information Office in Dublin, will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on EU Affairs tomorrow 18 June as part of its series of discussions on the future of the European Union. The meeting is likely to focus on the role of an ever more assertive European Parliament in underpinning democratic legitimacy and accountability in the European integration process.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “In recent months our Committee has debated widely on how to secure democratic legitimacy and accountability in an evolving European Union. In March, we discussed with a range of MEPs how we are to better connect the work of the European Parliament with the wider public. This is particularly pertinent since the 2008 Lisbon Treaty placed directly-elected MEPs at the heart of the EU decision-making process. As the European Union shifts from crisis management mode to a more proactive approach, we will engage with Francis Jacobs on the role that the European Parliament is playing in bolstering public confidence in Europe's capacity to deliver for its citizens.”

The meeting takes place at 2:30 pm tomorrow afternoon Tuesday 18 June in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here: http://www.oireachtas.ie/parliament/watchlisten/
