Jobs Committee to discuss South East Economic Development Strategy

17 Meith 2013, 16:00

The South East Economic Development Strategy will be discussed by the Committee on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation when it meets with the Waterford City Manager and the Kilkenny County Manager; representatives from Waterford IT and Carlow IT; and farming groups tomorrow, Tuesday 18th June 2013.

Chairman of the Committee Deputy Damien English said: “It is clear that recession and the collapse in the construction sector has hit the South East region particularly hard, with unemployment rates of around 19%, and that there is a need to focus on policies to further develop the region.

“Committee Member, Senator David Cullinane, was appointed Special Rapporteur on a report to bring forward a major Jobs Action Plan for the South-East to help revive the economic fortunes of the region, foster and attract enterprise and create jobs.

“Senator Cullinane has carried out the extensive consultations with stakeholders from across the region and, as part of the process of compiling the report, tomorrow we will meet with representatives from the local government, education and farming sectors to discuss the South East Economic Development Strategy and consider priorities for the region in terms of attracting investment, job creation, enterprise support and infrastructure development.”
