EU Affairs Committee to engage with leading think-tank on EU reform

19 Meith 2013, 18:08

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on EU Affairs will meet with Roland Freudenstein of the Centre for European Studies tomorrow 20 June as part of its series of discussions on the future of the European Union.

19 June 2013

The Centre for European Studies is a leading Brussels-based think tank, with links to the European People's Party. Established in 2007, it promotes 'Christian Democrat, conservative and like-minded political values' which flow into EPP policy.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “In recent months our Committee has debated widely on how to secure democratic legitimacy and accountability in an evolving European Union. Mr Freudenstein will present an overview of a recent policy brief by the CES. The report contains a number of recommendations for the upcoming European elections in 2014, including that the introduction of transnational lists of candidates for the European Parliament be advanced, that the biggest political parties should declare their candidate for Commission president before the upcoming elections and that more regular high-level consultation and dialogue between members of national parliaments and European policy makers on economic, financial and budgetary policies should take place. We also intend to tease out some of the more longer term considerations contained in the report in bolstering democratic legitimacy.”

The meeting takes place at 12 noon tomorrow afternoon Thursday 20 June in Committee Room 3, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
