Health Committee to discuss role of public health nurses

The role of public health nurses will be the focus of the Committee of Health and Children at its meeting tomorrow, Thursday, June 27th 2013.

Attending tomorrow’s meeting are: Mary O’Dowd, Director, Institute of Community Health Nurses; John Hennessy, Regional Director of Operations West, Integrated Services Directorate; Dr Michael Shannon, Director, Nursing and Midwifery Services; and Martina Queally, Area Manager, Dublin South East/Wicklow, Health Service Executive.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “Public health nurses are employed by the Health Service Executive to provide a range of health care services in the community, in particular caring for children up to 18 years of age. Our Committee is aware that it is both a vital and a challenging role which is providing a valuable service for families throughout Ireland. Tomorrow we will meet with health professional to discuss in more detail the role of public health nurses, while Committee Members will have a chance to raise any issues they may have in relation to the roles of public health nurses.”

The meeting will start with scrutiny of EU legislative proposals:  COM(2013)39 and COM(2013)168 at 9.30am in Committee Room 2 tomorrow, Thursday, 27th June 2013.
