1 Iúil 2013, 13:12

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on EU Affairs will meet with Sonia Piedrafita of the Centre for European Policy Studies tomorrow 2 July as part of its series of discussions on the future of the European Union. The meeting will have a particular focus on strengthening democratic legitimacy and accountability in the EU.

1 July 2013

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan TD says: “In recent months our Committee has debated widely on how to secure democratic legitimacy and accountability in an evolving European Union. Sonia Piedrafita will tomorrow outline here work with the Centre for European Policy Studies, a leading Brussels-based think tank.  Founded in Brussels in 1983, the Centre has a particular focus on issues related to European integration in its work.

“This meeting comes after a successful Dublin COSAC plenary session last week, which saw over 300 of our counterparts from national parliaments across the EU engage on a wide range of issues of mutual concern. We will be keen therefore to explore with Ms Piedrafita how national parliaments can underpin democratic legitimacy in an evolving European Union.”

The meeting takes place at 2pm tomorrow afternoon Tuesday 2 July in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
