Foreign Affairs Committee to focus on UN Security Resolution 1325

2 Iúil 2013, 12:40

Implementation of Ireland's National Action Plan on UN Security Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security will be on the agenda of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade tomorrow, Wednesday, 3rd July 2013 when it meets with Liz McManus, Chair, Monitoring Group of Ireland's National Action Plan on the resolution

Committee Chairman Pat Breen TD said: “UNSCR 1325 was adopted in 2000 and is an important watershed marking global recognition of the unique and disproportionate impact of conflict on women and girls. It calls on all member states to take specific actions to address this, including the development of National Action Plans to implement the resolution. It recognises that women should be active participants in rebuilding their communities and countries following conflict, seeks the protection of women and girls from gender-based violence and the incorporation of gender perspectives in all peace-making and peace-building strategies and actions that are undertaken by the UN and its member states.

“Former Minister of State Liz McManus was appointed independent chair of the Monitoring Group to oversee progress on the implementation of the National Action Plan. Tomorrow’s meeting is an opportunity for Committee Members to be briefed on the National Action Plan, issues relating to Resolution 1325 and the future work of the Monitoring Group.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 1, Leinster House at 2.30pm on Wednesday, 3rd July 2013.

Later at 5.30pm, the Committee will discuss Revised Estimates for Public Services – Vote 27 (International Co-operation); and Vote 28 (Foreign Affairs and Trade) with the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore TD and Minister of State at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade Joe Costello TD.
