Agriculture Committee to discuss fallout from TLT closure

20 Samh 2013, 13:48

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine will tomorrow discuss the closure of TLT International and what safeguards can be put in place to prevent a similar reoccurrence.

20 November 2013

The Westmeath-based company, which was involved in live cattle exports to Italy, went into receivership earlier this month.
Representatives from Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS); Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA); Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association (ICMSA); and Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers' Association (ICSA) will appear before the Committee.

Chairman of the Committee Andrew Doyle TD says: “The closure of TLT International has prompted deep concern within marts and among farmers around the country, particularly in the Midlands, West and Southwest. It is understood that many cooperative marts across the country have substantial liabilities and ICOS are expected to update the Committee on the current situation. The main farmers organisations are expected to brief the Committee on the potential of this episode to undermine confidence in the live cattle trade, as well as their concerns on the individual farmers are exposed to potential losses.  While the Committee acknowledge the fears and frustrations arising from TLT International’s closure, tomorrow’s meeting will have a wider focus on what safeguards can be put in place to prevent a similar reoccurrence.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 21 November at 11 am in Committee Room 3 LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.
