Health Committee to discuss treatment and prevention of Lyme Disease

The Joint Oireachtas Committee on Health and Children will discuss the treatment and prevention of Lyme (Borreliosis) Disease at its meeting tomorrow, Thursday, 21st November 2013.

Attending tomorrow’s hearings are:

Dr Armin Schwarzbach, International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society; Dr Eoin Healy, UCC; Mr Michael Casey, Regional Veterinary Laboratory; Ms Annette Moloney; Ms Tracy Brennan; and Ms Lisa Vandegrift Davala.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “Lyme Disease, which also known as Lyme-Borreliosis is a debilitating disease caused by a tick bite. Symptoms include headaches, chronic fatigue, exhaustion and flu-like feelings. Tomorrow we will hear from a number of experts in relation to the treatment and prevention of Lyme disease, as well as hearing from a number of Lyme Disease patients on their experiences of diagnosis and treatment of the disease. It is an opportunity for members to get updated on the disease, its prevalence in Ireland and how it is being dealt with by our health system.”

The meeting will start at 9.30m in Committee Room 2, Leinster House tomorrow, Thursday, 21st November 2013.
