Transport Committee to discuss developing a sustainable tourism industry

4 Noll 2013, 16:08

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow hear from a range of voices on developing a competitive and sustainable tourism industry, both regionally and nationally.

4 December 2013

The Committee will hear from a leading expert and successful practitioner in the sector as well as from senior county council officials, who will discuss how to build on the success of this year's Gathering:

  • Peter Hynes, County Manager, and Joanne Grehan, Head of Mayo Enterprise and Investment Unit at Mayo County Council;
  • Mr John James O'Hara, Pure Irish Life Tours, Co Leitrim, and
  • Jerome Casey, Tourism Industry Analyst

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “Tourism is an hugely important indigenous industry, employing thousands of people around the country in rural and urban areas. After four difficult years, Irish tourism has experienced a significant upturn in fortunes in 2013, with the Gathering initiative contributing to a sizeable increase in numbers from most markets. Tomorrow's meeting will have a particular focus on sustaining the industry in rural areas such as Mayo and Leitrim. Some of the discussions are also expected to centre on how best to attract the growing middle classes in emerging markets, such as China and India, to Ireland.”

The meeting will take place tomorrow Thursday 5 December at 12:30 pm in Committee Room 4, LH 2000, and can be followed online here.
