Transport Committee to consider competition in the Irish ports sector

4 Feabh 2014, 12:43

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow consider the policy steps necessary to bolster competition in the Irish ports sector.

4 February 2014

Isolde Goggin, Chair of the Competition Authority, will address the Committee on the current levels of competition between Ireland's ports. The Authority was recently commissioned to carry out a study of the efficiency of the main ports, recognising their importance for our export-led economy.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “ Ireland's economic recovery is heavily dependent on our exporters, who in turn rely on an efficient port system to trade with the wider world. Ms Goggin and her colleagues are expected to outline to the Committee the findings of their study of the ports sector. The study, which included a public consultation, was produced following a request from the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD in June 2012 as part of the Action Plan for Jobs. Tomorrow's meeting will be a valuable opportunity to assess the policy steps required to bolster competition and optimise efficiency among Irish ports.\"

The meeting will take place tomorrow Wednesday 5 February at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000, and can be followed online here.
