EU Affairs Committee to consider work of Committee of the Regions

12 Feabh 2014, 11:11

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs will tomorrow consider the experiences of the Irish delegation to the Committee of the Regions (CoR).

12 February 2014

The CoR is an advisory body which represents local and regional government in the EU policy formation and decision-making processes.

Head of the Irish Delegation Councillor Patrick McGowan will be joined by Councillors Constance Hanniffy, Des Hurley, Declan McDonnell, Brian Meaney, John Sheahan, Fiona O'Loughlin and Paul O'Donoghue.

Chairman of the Committee Dominic Hannigan says: “European Union policymaking is guided by the principle of subsidiarity, meaning that decisions should be taken as closely as possible to the citizen. The Committee of the Regions, which comprises 344 local and regional representatives from across the Union, is an important institution to ensure that the views, experiences and concerns of local and regional assemblies are fed into EU policy. Tomorrow, the Committee will hear from the Irish Delegation to the CoR to assess their role in ensuring the interests of local authorities in Ireland are ventilated at European level.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Thursday 13 February at 2 pm in Committee Room 3, Leinster House 2000. Committee proceedings can be followed here.
