Transport Committee to consider Sport Ireland Bill 2014 with key stakeholders

18 Feabh 2014, 10:30

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow commence pre-legislative scrutiny of the Sport Ireland Bill 2014 with key stakeholders. The Bill proposes a merger of the Irish Sports Council and the National Sports Campus Development Authority.

18 February 2014

Sean Benton and David Conway, Chairman and CEO respectively of the National Sports Campus Development Authority as well as Kieran Mulvey and Mr John Treacy, Chairman and  Chief Executive respectively of Irish Sports Council, will address the Committee on the implications of the proposed merger.

The Committee’s remit covers the activities of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “The Sport Ireland Bill 2014 proposes that a new agency, to be called Sport Ireland, will replace the National Sports Campus and the Irish Sports Council. As legislators with responsibility for this area, it is important that we engage with key stakeholders on the relative merits the legislation.  We intend to carefully consider this legislation, which proposes to bring the implementation of Irish sports policy under the one roof. On foot of this public process, the Committee will report on the legislation, which will inform future consideration of the Bill by the Dáil and Seanad.\"

The Committee meeting will commence with consideration of a series of EU Legislative Proposals:

  • COM(2013)512, which updates EU rules governing package travel to take account of digital advances;
  • COM(2013)595, which relates to the training, certification and watchkeeping for fishermen, and
  • COM(2013)922, which relates to revitalising Europe’s railways.

 The Committee will discuss the proposals in private, before commenting on its recommendations for the proposals in public session. The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 19 February at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
