Communications Committee to consider concerns around Post Office network

25 Feabh 2014, 13:41

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications will tomorrow meet with Brian McGann, Secretary General of the Irish Postmasters’ Union (IPU), to discuss concerns around the sustainability of the post office network

25 February 2014

Comprising 90 percent of postmasters nationally, the IPU highlight and represent the interests of Postmasters with An Post, Government and politicians generally.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “As a Committee, we are acutely aware of valuable service that the nation's 1,150 post offices provide in every corner of the country. Last year, we published a report on what policy steps were required to secure a viable and vibrant post office network. We concluded that survival of post offices, deeply rooted in the communities they serve, is dependent on an expansion in the products and services they currently provide.

“Tomorrow will provide an opportunity to engage with the Irish Postmasters’ Union on their on-going concerns around the viability of the network. Their presentation is expected to acknowledge the work done by this Committee and others, but argue that no real action has been taken to secure the future of the network. As a Committee we look forward to hearing the perspective of the IPU on how the sustainability of the post office network can be best secured.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 26 February at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
