Foreign Affairs Committee to consider work of Trócaire

25 Feabh 2014, 14:21

Executive Director Éamonn Meehan of Trocáire is before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade tomorrow for a wide ranging discussion on the work of this organisation.

25 February 2014

Established in 1973, Trócaire is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland and works through a partnership model with civil society organisations in Ireland and abroad.

Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says: “Trócaire is one of the biggest and most respected development aid agencies in Ireland, whose work in 2012/13 benefitted over 2.7 million people. Tomorrow, our Committee will have an opportunity to explore some of this valuable work with Éamonn Meehan. In 2012, the organisation refined its geographic focus, reducing the number of countries in which it works work from 27 to 17 over the period 2013-2015. We look forward to learning about Trócaire's deepened engagement with a smaller number of countries and the greater impact it expects to deliver thereby.

“The Committee may also wish to explore the long and fruitful relationship between Trócaire and the official Irish Aid programme. In 2012, Irish Aid granted €15.7m to Trócaire to cover programme areas in governance and human rights, HIV, gender equality, sustainable livelihoods and disaster risk reduction over four years to 2016.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 26 February at 2:30 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
