Foreign Affairs Committee to consider Ukraine unrest with Tánaiste

3 Márta 2014, 13:00

Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore TD comes before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade tomorrow afternoon.

3 March 2014

The meeting will consider the outcomes from today’s emergency session of the Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels, where the Tánaiste is discussing the on-going crisis in the Ukraine with his European counterparts.

Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says: “The Committee has been following the escalation of hostilities in the Ukraine with deep concern. The build-up of Russian forces over the weekend in Crimea poses a serious challenge to EU leaders, and the Committee looks forward to an exchange with the Tánaiste on the European Union's response to the crisis. As well as threatening Ukraine’s independence and territorial integrity, the tensions also pose the most serious difficulty in the relationship between the West and Russia since the end of the Cold War. It remains the Committee's view that dialogue is the only way forward on these matters and the Committee intends to assess with the Tánaiste how a pathway might be found to diffuse this alarming crisis for the Ukraine and the wider region.”

The Tánaiste’s presence tomorrow will also allow Committee Members to discuss with him other recent and forthcoming Foreign Affairs Council agenda items.

The meeting takes place tomorrow Tuesday 4 March at 4:30 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
