Students have their say as Oireachtas Committee marks Seachtain na Gaeilge

3 Márta 2014, 11:19

Second-level students will get a chance to tell politicians what they think this week in Leinster House – and they’ll be doing it as Gaeilge.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 4th March 2014, to mark Seachtain na Gaeilge, the Committee on the Environment, Culture and the Gaeltacht has invited young people from three secondary schools to address it in Irish on the following topics:

1. Finding a job in Ireland
2. Global Warming - Is it our fault?
3. Same-Sex Marriage or Civil Partnership

The three schools are:  Coláiste de hÍde, Tallaght, Dublin; Coláiste Dheoise Naomh Mhuireadaigh, Ballina, Co. Mayo; Coláiste Ghobnatan, Ballingeary, Co. Cork.

It’s the third time the Committee will host students as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge following a number of very successful events in Leinster House over the past few years.

Cathaoirleach of the Committee Michael McCarthy TD said: “We’re looking forward to our meeting tomorrow with students from Coláiste de hÍde; Coláiste Dheoise Naomh Mhuireadaigh; and Coláiste Ghobnatan. This is a great opportunity for the Committee and the Oireachtas to celebrate and mark Seachtain na Gaeilge with many of the young people who will play a key part of keeping the Irish language alive and part of our culture into the future. It is also a unique opportunity for second level students to address an Oireachtas Committee on topics which matter to them and which impact on their lives today and into the future.”

“Seachtain na Gaeilge is an international Irish language festival and one of the biggest celebrations of our native language and culture that takes place each year in Ireland and in many other countries.  Seachtain na Gaeilge 2014 promises to be bigger than ever, running from 1st – 17th March, and whether you are a fluent speaker, just have a couple of words or are interested in learning the language, Seachtain Na Gaeilge is a great occasion for us all to celebrate and enjoy our language. Our Committee is glad to play its part in celebrating this very important event to foster knowledge of, and interest in, the Irish language.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.15pm tomorrow, Tuesday 4th March 2014.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
