4 Márta 2014, 17:32

The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Social Protection will tomorrow afternoon consider the implications of the EU White Paper on Pensions with key stakeholders.

4 March 2014

Officials from the Department of Social Protect, the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) and the Irish Brokers Association (IBA) will address the Committee.

Issued in 2012, the White Paper proposes a wide reform of pensions to deal among other things with –

  • Creating better opportunities for older workers
  • Developing complementary private retirement schemes
  • Enhancing the safety of supplementary pension schemes, and improve how they facilitate mobility
  • Encouraging Member States to promote longer working lives
  • Monitoring the adequacy and sustainability of pensions and supporting pension reforms the Member States.

Chair of the Committee, Joanna Tuffy, TD, says “Many EU Member States find themselves facing significant demographic challenges, which are posing a threat to the sustainability of their pension systems. The EU White Paper on pensions, published by the Commission in 2012, seeks to respond to these challenges on a Union-wide basis. The White Paper has significant implications for Ireland in relation to financial issues, labour market issues, and issues relating to older people. The meeting tomorrow forms part of the Committee's on-going consideration of the pensions issue. Last month, the Committee met with a  range of stakeholders to consider recent and proposed increases in the age at which the State Pension is paid.”

The meeting takes place today Wednesday 5 March at 1 pm in Committee Room 3, LH 2000 and can be viewed online here.
Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
