Health Committee to focus on Chief Medical Officer’s report into perinatal deaths at Portlaoise Hospital

5 Márta 2014, 12:52

The Chief Medical Officer’s report into deaths of infants at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise will be the focus of the Joint Committee on Health and Children when it meets with the Minister for Health Dr James Reilly TD; Dr Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer; and representatives from the Health Service Executive tomorrow, Thursday, 6th March 2014.

Committee Chairman, Jerry Buttimer TD said: “The report into perinatal deaths at Portlaoise Hospital by Dr Tony Holohan found that maternity services at the hospital are not safe or sustainable. It also concluded that families and patients were treated in a poor and at times appalling manner, with limited respect, kindness, courtesy and consideration. This is a terrible tragedy for the families involved and we extend our deepest sympathies to them at this difficult time. At our meeting tomorrow we will consider the report in detail with the Minister, the Chief Medical Officer and officials from the HSE.”

The meeting will start at 9.45am in Committee Room 2, Leinster House tomorrow, Thursday, 6th March 2014.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.

Proceedings will also be carried on UPC channel 207. Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
