Sub Committee to discuss resignation of the Coimisinéir Teanga

5 Márta 2014, 12:05

The Sub-Committee on the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language and Related Matters will discuss the resignation of former Coimisinéir Teanga Seán Ó Curreáin when it meets with Dinny McGinley TD, Minister of State with special responsibility for Gaeltacht Affairs, tomorrow, Thursday, 6th March 2014.

Committee Cathaoirleach Michael McCarthy TD said: “The Coimisinéir Teanga’s role is to monitor compliance by public bodies with the provisions of the Official Languages Act. In December, the then Coimisinéir Teanga Seán Ó Curreáin announced he was stepping down from his post, citing continued failures by the State to comply with legislation on the use of Irish. As the Sub-Committee tasked with reviewing the progress that has been made to date in implementing the 20 Year Strategy for the Irish Language, it is opportune that we meet with the Minister with special responsibility for Gaeltacht Affairs Dinny McGinley to discuss in detail the resignation of Seán Ó Curreáin from his post last year and the reasons he gave for his decision.”

The meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.15pm on Thursday, 6th March 2014.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
