Justice Committee to meet Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas

10 Márta 2014, 10:29

The Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality will focus on the situation regarding Irish prisoners serving imprisonment for public protection sentences in the United Kingdom when it meets with representative from Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “The Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas is a charitable organisation that provides information and support to Irish prisoners overseas and their families. The Council is currently providing support to more than 1,000 Irish prisoners in the UK, a number of whom are serving Indeterminate Sentences for Public Protections (IPP). The ICPO has expressed concern that the Department of Justice and Equality is not accepting repatriation applications from IPP sentenced prisoners on the basis that there is no equivalent sentence under Irish law. Tomorrow, the Council will have an opportunity to outline in more detail the situation regarding Irish prisoners serving serving Indeterminate Sentences for Public Protections and Committee members will have a chance to raise any issues they may have.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 4, Leinster House at 2.30pm tomorrow, Tuesday 11th March 2014.
