Communications Committee to meet An Post representatives

11 Márta 2014, 12:31

Representatives from An Post are before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport and Communications to consider the sustainability of the Post Office network.

11 March 2014

John Daly, Retail Operations Director of An Post will address the Committee along with Liam Sheehan, Director of Sales and Marketing.

Chairman of the Committee John O’Mahony TD says: “The meeting with An Post representatives tomorrow forms part of the Committee’s sustained and careful consideration of the matter, which included publication of a Committee Report last year charting a course for diversification of post office services. With heightened public interest in recent weeks, the Committee is keen to provide a space where solutions can be found to safeguard the nation’s post offices.

“Representatives from the Irish Postmasters’ Union addressed the Committee in recent weeks, arguing that enhanced banking services for the country’s post offices should be pursued, with the assistance of all relevant government departments and agencies. We look forward to engaging with An Post representatives tomorrow on how an expansion in the products and services currently provided might be pursued. Undoubtedly the An Post company, the Postmasters' Union, Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte TD and his Department, as well as the communities themselves each have a role to play in securing the future of this indispensable service to citizens in every corner of the country.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 12 March at 9:30 am in Committee Room 4, LH 2000. The meeting will commence with consideration of EU legislative proposals related to energy including COM(2014)8,  COM(2014)23 and C(2014)267-4  .

From 9:45 am to 10:15 am approximately, the Committee will meet with representatives from the Irish Veteran and Vintage Car Club to consider the implications of new vehicle roadworthiness regulations for their Members.

Engagement with An Post representatives is scheduled to commence at 10:15 am. Public proceedings can be viewed online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
