Foreign Affairs Committee to meet Russian Ambassador on Ukraine crisis

11 Márta 2014, 17:19

The Russian Ambassador to Ireland Maxim Peshkov will appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Foreign Affairs and Trade tomorrow Wednesday to discuss the current situation in the Ukraine.

11 March 2014

Tomorrow’s engagement follows Committee meetings last week with the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Eamon Gilmore TD and Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland Sergii Reva.

Chairman of the Committee Pat Breen TD says: “As a Committee, we are continuing to follow the crisis in Ukraine closely and with deep concern. This strong condemnation by the Tánaiste of Russian actions at last week’s meeting was echoed across the Committee Membership, as was the necessity for dialogue between all parties. Tomorrow, we will meet with the Ambassador of the Russian Federation Maxim Peshkov who will outline the Russian perspective on the crisis. As a Committee, we are keen to stress the importance of all states acting within international law and to explore with him how Russia’s interests in the area might be legitimately pursued. The Committee will also wish to raise the implications of the proposed referendum to be held in Crimea next week. Tomorrow’s discussion will provide the Committee with the opportunity to further inform itself on this most grave situation, and to consider the steps that might be available to mitigate the crisis.”

The meeting takes place tomorrow Wednesday 12 March at 2:30 pm in Committee Room 1, LH 2000. It can be viewed live on Oireachtas UPC Channel 207 and online here.

Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the move, through the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
