Justice Committee to discuss Criminal Justice (Forensic Evidence and DNA Database System) Bill 2013

11 Márta 2014, 12:34

The Criminal Justice (Forensic Evidence and DNA Database System) Bill 2013 will be the focus of the Select Committee on Justice, Defence and Equality tomorrow when it meets with Minister for Justice and Equality Alan Shatter TD.

Committee Chairman David Stanton, TD, said: “The Criminal Justice (Forensic Evidence and DNA Database System) Bill 2013 was published on 11 September 2013. The main purposes of the Bill are to replace the existing statutory and common law arrangements governing the taking of samples for forensic testing from suspects for use as evidence in criminal investigations and proceedings with an updated statute-only regime; and provide for the establishment of a DNA database system for use by the Garda Síochána as an intelligence source for criminal investigations and also to assist in finding or identifying missing or unknown persons. Tomorrow, the Bill will receive detailed consideration and members will have the opportunity to propose and discuss any amendments to the legislation as published.”

This meeting will start in Committee Room 2, Leinster House at 9.30am tomorrow, Wednesday, 12th March 2014.

Committee proceedings can be followed live here.
